A Utah State Board of Education member was stripped of her committee assignments and asked to resign this week after she questioned the gender of a high school basketball player in a Facebook post. Natalie Cline, the board member, posted a flyer for a high school basketball team in Salt Lake County on Feb. 6 with the caption “Girls’ basketball,” suggesting that one of the girls featured in the image was not female. The post, which was reported on by KSL TV, a television channel in Salt Lake City, has since been deleted. The board said Wednesday that, after an investigation, it had decided to censure Ms. Cline, request her resignation and ban her from attending board committee meetings for failing to respect the privacy of students, including portraying them publicly in a negative light. The Utah Legislature passed a resolution on Thursday against Ms. Cline for her “abhorrent actions” that had led to “relentless harassment and bullying, including threats of violence” of a student.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Erin Mendenhall is seeking reelection as mayor of Utah’s capital Tuesday in a ranked-choice contest that includes a challenge by former Mayor Rocky Anderson. Anderson, who served two terms from 2000-2008, has criticized Mendenhall for not doing enough to alleviate the rising cost of housing. "Salt Lake City is building more affordable housing than every mayoral administration combined by a lot — 413% increase in our investment in the creation of affordable housing units. However the affordable housing being built has been for those with incomes far higher than most service industry workers make, Valentine pointed out. It is the first Salt Lake City mayor's race since the capital, along with a number of Utah cities instituted ranked-choice voting in 2021.

Siri called emergency services after mishearing a boxing instructor, a gym owner told Insider. The term is similar to the number for emergency services in Australia and other countries. He said the digital assistant then called 112, which is an alternative emergency number in Australia and other countries. If the message is not dismissed it sends an automated message to the nearest emergency call center. Last week, a spokesperson for Apple told The New York Post that the company was getting feedback from emergency call centers, which have reported a spike in automated calls.
Apple is reportedly talking with 911 call centers dealing with an increase in accidental calls. Emergency dispatchers in a Utah county told local news that they're seeing more accidental 911 calls from skiers. Dispatchers told KSL.com the calls are from Apple devices with a new crash-detection feature. Apple's crash-detection technology sends users a message with an alarm sound if it detects a crash. Even with accidental triggering of the technology, the report highlights that dispatchers still view the crash-detection technology as a positive, and recommend people keep it turned on. The crash-detection feature has also set off accidental 911 calls for users who were riding roller coasters, The Wall Street Journal reported in October.

He was charged Tuesday with assault with a dangerous weapon on or near aircraft and carrying a weapon on a flight, prosecutors with the U.S. Justice Department’s District of Utah office said. Officials say he boarded a flight at John F. Kennedy International Airport with a concealed straight-edge razor marketed to barbers. The woman said he held the razor near her throat as he told her to pause the movie, according to prosecutors. During the game, she said, the crowd nearby began chanting “F--- the Mormons.” Over and over. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU’s sponsoring institution, Aubrey wanted the chanting to stop. Latter-day Saints have a fair track record when it comes to cheek-turning. There’s of course a balance to strike in the case of the Oregon chants. And yet, if you can publicly chant “F--- the Mormons” with only minimal social consequences, it’s time for Latter-day Saints to collectively push, as Aubrey sought to do, for greater and more immediate action.
The 21-year-old student posted the threat on the social media application Yik Yak, according to a university statement. “She acknowledged posting the statement and was arrested and taken to the Salt Lake County Jail and booked for making terroristic threats,” officials said.
